Black Lives Matter

Dear Community,

At Give a Folk, we believe the power of sharing and listening to stories builds and strengthens community and that the health of our community reflects how well we treat our neighbors, especially the most vulnerable.

We have been processing and mourning the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Brionna Taylor, George Floyd, and remembering the many others who were murdered before them. Their deaths are brutal reminders of how much work we must do!

To our Black and Brown community we stand as allies and in solidarity with you.

To the members of our community who hold racial privilege; please educate yourself by listening to black storytellers, reading books and articles written by black authors and thinking about how you can use your voice to lift up the people of color around you. We must do better!

In times like this…

Response to COVID-19…

  1. Practice Social Distancing: As restrictions are being put in place to promote social distancing—avoiding crowds and limiting close contact (at least six feet) with anyone outside of immediate family. REMEMBER — You can still stay in touch and communicate with family and friends by phone, mail or applications like FaceTime, Zoom or WhatsApp.
  2. Wear a mask when out in public spaces to protect yourself, your family and those around you. When you get home take off your shoes and wash your hands!
  3. Give blood if you’re able: Red Cross and other organizations are in dire need of blood supply and have safe, healthy ways for you to donate.
  4. Help your local food pantry: Contact your local food pantry. Your support will help them provide food items for families in need.
  5. Check on neighbors and family members, especially those who live alone, are elderly, have health or mobility issues or are caring for children.
  6. Support local businessesschools and child care centers: When possible, purchase gift cards to local shops businesses online that you can use once storefronts reopen, and uplift those who are trying to keep afloat.
  7. Provide support to frontline health workers and first responders: Many health workers are not able to stay at home and are working around the clock, so take on tasks that they don’t have time to do as an expression of gratitude.
  8. Assist in local fundraising efforts: Look into options that provide much-needed supplies to families, such as Amazon Wish Lists, as well as the work of your local community and volunteer organizations.
  9. Stay informed: Only share information from credible sources like your state department of health or the CDC. Remember, when you stay calm, others will follow.
  10. Take care of yourself and others: Practice patience, kindness and mindfulness. Encourage others to do the same!
